BJP demands Bharat Ratna for Maharaja Hari Singh
11/14/2019 10:55:39 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 14: More than three months after the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, the J&K unit of the BJP has demanded the country's highest civilian honour - the Bharat Ratna - for Maharaja Hari Singh.
Hari Singh had signed the instrument of accession on October 26, 1947 which paved the way for the accession of the princely state of J&K with the Union of India at that time.
President of the J&K BJP Ravinder Raina said that his party wants Bharat Ratna honour for the last King of J&K.
Hailing the Dogra ruler as a great social reformer and a progressive king, Raina said that Maharaja Hari Singh contributed immensely in the development of the society in J&K. He added that he will soon meet Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and request them to accept the demand of the people of Jammu.
"Maharaja Hari Singh was a visionary and progressive king. He opened the doors of temples for Dalits. He made education compulsory for the girl child. He abolished child marriage. Time has come to honour him. We want that he should be awarded Bharat Ratna. I will meet Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah and raise this demand. I'm quite hopeful that they will accept this demand," said Ravinder Raina said.
Ravinder Raina further said that keeping in view the sentiments of the people of Jammu, he would also appeal to the government to declare Maharaja Hari Singh's birthday as an official holiday in J&K.
Lashing out at the PDP, NC and Congress, Ravinder Raina accused them of denying the rightful place to Maharaja Hari Singh in the history of J&K.
"A great ruler like Maharaja Hari Singh was demonised by NC and Congress. Congress party humiliated and ill-treated him after he signed the instrument of accession. He was forced into exile. But now we will ensure that he gets justice. We want country's highest civilian honour for Maharaja Hari Singh. We also demand that Brig Rajinder Singh and Maqbool Sherwani be given Bharat Ratna in recognition of their supreme sacrifice while defending the territory of J&K against Pakistan's aggression in 1947," added Ravinder Raina.
