Successive regimes in centre ignored Jammu, pampered Kashmir

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 6: Residents of Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir are likely to get the domicile status to protect employment and land ownership rights.
According to the media reports, central government is working on a proposal and announcement in this regard is likely to be made soon.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Revocation of J&K's special status which provided exclusive rights to permanent residents of Jammu & Kashmir have created insecurity among the people especially in Jammu region."
He said that the last Dogra ruler of the princely state of J&K, Maharaja Hari Singh had introduced special provisions to prevent outsiders from intruding into the Himalayan region of Jammu & Kashmir. "More than anyone else it is the Dogras who need to protect their identity. Jammu is growing at a fast pace and outsiders are eyeing this region. Not many people want to go to Kashmir due to prevailing circumstances in the Valley. For them Jammu is the preferred destination," the analyst added.
He said, "Having domicile status will help Dogras to safeguard their identity, culture and moral values. Since the day centre has abrogated Article 370, the issue of permanent residents getting the domicile status is being raised by one and all in Jammu region."
An observer said that the BJP led NDA government needs to realize the concerns of the Jammu people, who during the past 70 years have been fighting the hegemony of Kashmir-centric leaders to protect their identity and culture. "Since 1947 entire discourse has revolved around Kashmir and successive regimes which ruled the country maintained that Kashmir is the focus area for them. Assembly seats in Jammu region were purportedly reduced by the Kashmir-centric leaders to empower Kashmir. In the last 70 years no one among Dogra leaders could become the Chief Minister of J&K. This injustice has to end but protecting the rights of permanent J&K residents is prerequisite for empowering them politically," the observer added.
Another analyst said, "Jammu & Kashmir is not only about Kashmir it is about Jammu also, where people have been fighting against all the odds to keep the tricolour flying. People of Jammu region have stood with the country since 1947 and they never allowed Pakistan sponsored terrorists to establish their base in the region. They stood by the security forces and their fight against terror. It's the duty of the central government to protect the domicile rights and give them what they deserve."
