Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 14: The repeated queries forwarded by transport officers from various districts of Jammu region, regarding scale of road tax to be charged from old vehicles as well as transferred ones, have yet to be responded, thus leaving thousands of vehicles without any registration.
Sources in Transport department informed Early Times that for the last over four months, since state government had imposed road tax of 9-10 % on all type of vehicles, the officials from various districts have been sending written communication, seeking clarification over scale of tax imposed on old vehicles as well as those vehicles, which were to be transferred.
"The 9 % road tax on new vehicles is okay but the government order was silent over the road tax imposed on the old vehicles, which are to be re-registered or to get life extension. The order was silent on how to calculate the depreciation cost of an old vehicle and even on whether tractor an agricultural machinery, will be exempted from road tax or not", sources said, adding that even the order was silent about calculating GST.
In the last four months, over half a dozen queries were forwarded to the higher officials of department, out of which only one query regarding GST was responded by the department while remaining queries remained unanswered, an official said, adding that once the government would take a decision on the registration of old vehicles and the transferred vehicles, the rest of work would be done.
"Once the government will take decision the software on the website would also be updated and the re-registration of vehicles would be done", an official said, adding that for the last over four months none of the old vehicle has been re-registered due to lack of clarity among the government officials, leaving thousands of vehicles document less and that too during the Lieutenant Governor.
