Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 21: Already hit with large number of anomalies which regularly hit at the patient care, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu also practices some clandestine irregularities which are generally overseen by the patients and their attendants in distress. At emergency wing of the hospital, whenever a patient is approached with its attendant, he has to get a slip of entrance at the side window which costs Rs 5 only. Though many patients are not aware of the slip, but when the doctor attending asks the attendant to get the slip in the name of the patient, the attendant rushes to the window to get the slip.
Here the GMC employees’ foul game comes into practice. Generally the attendants do not possess the Rs 5 coin or note and forwards Rs 10 or Rs 20 note to the window which is reciprocated by a lame excuse by the attendant at the window for not having the change.
Though the person in distress request for the slip in emergency, the attendant at the window says to claim the remaining amount later which either is forgotten by the person or, if approached, again is given a lame excuse by the GMC authority for not having the change.
In such circumstances, the attendant of the patent is left with no option but to concede the remaining amount to the window which adds to the illegal gain by the authority at the window. An attendant of the patient who forwarded Rs 10 note last night to the window had to suffer the same agony and had to part with the remaining amount which obviously went into the pocket of the person attending at the window. A survey, however has released that by embarking upon such practice the window attendants at GMC emergency slip counter are making extra money which is quite legal.
When asked as to why they do not keep the change at the counter, the counter man replied that shortage of small denomination currency is the main reason. When asked, Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent, expressed his ignorance over such practice and said that he will look into the matter
“I will see that the window attendant should have enough of change of Rs 5 denomination so that the people may not feel at unease and properly attend to their patients”. Though the authorities claim to maintain a check on such practice, but the sources in the hospital say that such mafia is quite strong which has deep-rooted tentacles and higher ups are also involved in the foul game
