Kashmir growers earn Rs 70 Cr from MIS, Jammu gets nothing
2/14/2020 12:10:28 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 13: Even as the government launched the much-hyped Market Intervention Scheme for fruit growers in Kashmir, the MIS has helped Kashmir earn a whopping Rs 70 crore from the deal within six months, whereas Jammu region only craves for such schemes.
Official sources told Early Times that around 16,000 metric tons of apples were procured from the Kashmiri fruit growers after the launch of the special scheme in September of 2019.
Official documents reveal that as many as 12 lakh boxes of apples were procured under the scheme. Interestingly while south Kashmir is often seen a hotbed of militancy, the fruit growers from the area have been earning the most from the government scheme.
Officials said as many as five lakh boxes of apples were procured from Anantnag district alone whereas around 700 growers had registered with the government under the scheme.
In Shopian, which has 150 odd registered growers as many as 4.5 lakh boxes were purchased from the growers, where 1.50 lakh boxes were purchased from Kulgam district.
The government had introduced the MIS in a bid to assist the growers in the wake of shutdown in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
Interestingly, while the Jammu region had warmly welcomed the decision, no such MIS was introduced in the winter capital region.
This is despite the fact that farmers in Jammu have been bearing the brunt of terrorism and Pakistani aggression. The famous Basmati rice growers on RS Pura frontier have been so badly hit by bad weather and Pakistani aggression that the matter was even raised during the winter session of the Parliament.
The market pundits say if Kashmir is famous for apple, Jammu is equally famous for the crops like Basmati, oranges, papayas and even olive. “But the government looks least concerned about the interests of Jammu,” said a Jammuite who is also a civil society activist.
When contacted a senior official in the government confirmed that Kashmiri fruit growers had made the multi-crore earnings from the MIS.
