Amid BJP’s vibrant economy talk, street vendor ends life due to poverty
2/14/2020 12:11:28 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 13: A debt ridden 36-year old street vendor Tilak Raj committing a suicide by hanging himself inside his house in Doda district has punctured the tall claims of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders that their party is committed to make J&K economy “vibrant and prosperous.”
Bheja Panchayat Naib Sarpanch, Satish Kumar, while expressing grief over Raj’s death said that the deceased was very poor. “Raj was under depression as he was unsuccessful in fighting poverty. He was unable to clear his debts and make his both ends meet,” Kumar added.
The deceased is survived by his grandmother, wife and five minor daughters.
Despite economy witnessing a slow down and people like Tilak Raj committing suicide, BJP leaders like Yudhvir Sethi are claiming that his party is committed to uplift the poor. The BJP leader while interacting with the people in Rajeev Nagar recently claimed that there is no party that can match the BJP’s nationalistic credentials. He delivered long sermon on the economy and steps being taken to address the issues of poor people.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “BJP leaders like Yudhvir Sethi need to look around them and see how many difficulties people are facing. There are many Tilak Rajs, who are finding it hard to fight the poverty and are at the verge of ending their lives.”
The analyst said, “BJP leaders like Sethi should tell the people what they have done for the poor people during the past five years.
It’s unfortunate that entire narrative of the saffron party has revolved around only a few specific issues and nothing much has been done to uplift the poor.”
An observer said that the BJP leaders from J&K have failed to get any special economic package for the people living Below Poverty Line (BPL). “During all these years they have just rendered lip service to the people and nothing more. BJP leaders should stop indulging in rhetoric and do something practical to help the poor so that no one imitates Tilak Raj and ends his life,” he added.
