Is Doctors Association Kashmir trying to create fear psychosis among people?
Director Health assures action, asks people not to pay heed to anything not coming from health department

Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 17: The so called ‘Doctors Association of Kashmir’ is these days at the centre of the peoples wrath due to its controversial and self contradictory statements which it often issues the already fear stricken people of Kashmir.
The association without any authorisation from the government is posing itself as peoples’ health expert, often sending health advisories to the newspapers. Sometimes, the association issues blood pressure warnings to people, advising them to measure the blood pressure readings at home several times a week, and at times it makes the ‘normal’ blood pressure readings pubic. “This DAK is some kind of a mysterious organisation which seems to have been tasked to create fear psychosis among people about various diseases. It also keeps issuing the health advisories even when it hasn’t been mandated by the government to do so. The crux of the matter is that it all looks fishy and troublesome in nature,” says a Srinagar based resident.
The association is finding these days at the centre of criticism as it issued two back to back self contradictory statements about the Viral Flu in Kashmir.
On February 13, the association stated that this year’s flu season has witnessed surge in flu cases due to an unexpected virus. “Influenza B virus has overtaken swine flu virus this season, which is not typical,” said DAK in a statement.
"More than 80% flu cases this season, so far were because of this virus. At SKIMS hospital, out of 398 positive cases, 318 were because of influenza B and only 80 were positive for swine flu. 91 confirmed cases needed hospitalization. Also, at SMHS hospital, most of the cases were positive for influenza B. majority of these cases were detected in this month which gives us to understand that there is increase in flu activity,” said the statement.
However, a day later, a total contradictory statement about the flu was issued by the DAK itself again. It appealed people not to panic and don't pay heeds to any rumours as this is only a seasonal flu and not swine flu. "The seasonal flu, is a viral infection of the respiratory tract caused by an influenza B virus. Symptoms can include fever, headache, runny nose, sore throat, or cough and chest congestion. Flu season generally occurs during the fall-winter and early spring and is usually self-limiting and non-fatal. The current peak in seasonal flu may take peak when schools will open after long winter break as this viral infection easily spreads from child to child," DAK said.
Meanwhile, when contacted Director Health Kashmir, Dr Samir Matoo told Early Times on phone that any public statement or advisory not coming from the health department shouldn’t be mistaken as anything issued from the government and that he will take up the issue with the Association. “I will inquire the matter myself. If there would have been any threat of any disease or flu, the department of health services Kashmir would have itself issued the advisory. What you have read through the newspapers could be an individual opinion of the medicos,” says Director Health Kashmir.
