Beigh-Bukhari meeting triggers speculations
Mehbooba’s PDP on last legs; former J&K CM left alone
2/19/2020 9:07:34 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 19: The recent meeting between senior PDP leader, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh and the PDP rebel Altaf Bukhari in Jammu has triggered speculations that both the leaders have buried the hatchet and are likely to join hands.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that if Beigh decides to say goodbye to the Peoples Democratic Party it would mean that the party led by the former J&K chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti, is over. “Muzaffar Beigh was the last hope for PDP to remain alive but his moving out could prove to be the last nail in PDP’s coffin,” the analyst added.
He said that Mehbooba Mufti, who has been under detention for the past six months, seems to have given up hope on her party. “Mehbooba seems to be aware of the fact that her party stands decimated and no one is standing by her side. Mehbooba’s daughter, Iltija Mufti, running her mother’s twitter handle and few second rung PDP leaders making some noise occasionally are the only visible signs of the PDP’s existence at present,” the analyst added.
The political scenario in Jammu and Kashmir has changed drastically post August 5, 2019, when the Government of India announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided the erstwhile State into two union territories.
An observer said that senior PDP leaders have realized that their party has no future as their leader (Mehbooba Mufti) cannot pull the party out of the quagmire of uncertainty.
“The disintegration of the PDP had commenced soon after the death of the PDP founder and former J&K chief minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Mehbooba failed to keep her flock together, which led to dissent within the party ranks and eventually led to PDP leaders moving out of the party fold one after the another,” the observer added. He said, “Altaf Bukhari has already announced that he would float his political party in coming days. Before Bukhari floats his party he is trying to rope in the heavy weights.”
Another analyst said, “One can’t even feel sorry for Mehbooba, who during her stint as J&K Chief Minister, pushed her own party leaders to the wall and left no opportunity to pursue separatist agenda in Kashmir. She sidelined the senior most leaders of her party and allowed non-entities to call the shots, which led to the PDP crumbling under its own weight.”
