‘Delimitation doesn’t mean victory for BJP in forthcoming polls’
2/21/2020 11:55:31 PM

JAMMU, Feb 21: The Election Commission of India appointing Election Commissioner, Sushil Chandra, as Delimitation Commissioner for Jammu and Kashmir has led to political activities getting revived in the newly carved out Union Territory.
The delimitation in J&K was announced on August 5 last year, when Centre announced its decision to abrogate the special status of the erstwhile State and divided into two Union Territories, J&K and Ladakh.
The delimitation will end the discrimination which Jammu region has been facing for the past seven decades as it will lead to number of assembly seats in Jammu getting increased.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “The BJP, which joined hands with the PDP in 2015 in Jammu and Kashmir, knows the importance of the forthcoming assembly elections in J&K UT. It is trying to create a notion that it’s the only viable option for the people of Jammu and is even dreaming about Chief Minister’s office. It seems that the leaders of the saffron party are unaware about the ground realities or are pretending so,” he added.
The analyst said, “When BJP shared power with the Kashmir centric PDP for more than three years its ministers never made an attempt to reach out to the people, who voted for them and ensured that BJP wins 25 out of 37 assembly seats in the 2014 assembly elections. It was due to the people of Jammu region that they (local BJP leaders) could get a chance to reach the Civil Secretariat.”
He said, “In return the BJP leaders instead of being thankful to the Jammu people went out of way to appease the PDP and its leaders. They ensured that they don’t annoy their friends in the Valley. They acted as second fiddles, much to the disappointment of the people of Jammu.”
An observer said, “The delimitation was the long pending demand of the people of Jammu region but it doesn’t mean that they will choose the BJP again. Promises which the BJP leaders had made during the 2014 election campaign fell flat as they failed to address the grievances of the denizens of this region. They allowed the PDP to put Kashmir first and Jammu last. They wasted an opportunity which they had got.”
He said that once the delimitation process is completed it will bring Jammu and par with Kashmir vis-à-vis distribution of the assembly seats but it doesn’t mean that the seats which will be increased in Jammu will belong to the BJP. “There are many options which have emerged in Jammu after local BJP leaders betrayed the people,” he added.
