Two LeT militants killed in encounter at Sangam-Bijbehara in Anantnag

SRINAGAR, Feb 22: Two local militants owing allegiance to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter with police and security forces at Sangam near Bijbehara in Anantnag district in the early hours today.
Reports said that the encounter took place when police and security forces cordoned off the Gund Baba Khali area at Sangam-Bijbehara in the South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Both the slain militants were residents of Kulgam district in South Kashmir.
A police spokesman said that on a credible input a cordon and search operation was launched jointly by police and security forces in Gund Baba Khali area of Sangam in district Anantnag. During the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter.
"In the ensuing encounter two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. The killed militants have been identified as Naveed Ahmad Bhat and Aqib Ahmad Bhat both residents of Kulgam," said the police spokesman.
The spokesman said that as per police records they were affiliated with proscribed militant outfit LeT and were wanted by law for their complicity in militancy related crimes including attacks on security establishments and civilian atrocities.
According to the police records, Naveed had a history of militancy related crimes since 2018 and was involved in planning and executing several attacks in the area. Several cases were registered against him including Case FIR No. 10/2019 pertaining to firing on Army camp at Khudwani Kulgam, FIR No. 31/2019 pertaining to civilian atrocities, FIR No. 67/2019 pertaining to planning of attacks on security forces in the area, FIR No. 03/2020 pertaining to recovery of ammunition at Rampora area of Kulgam besides several other terror crime cases were also registered against him including case FIR numbers 57/2018, 26/2019, 50/2019 of PS Qaimoh.
"Similarly, Aqib was involved in several militancy related cases including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities. Several cases were also registered against him including case FIR No. 34/2019 and 03/2020 of PS Qaimoh," said the spokesman. Pertinently there was no collateral damage during the course of encounter.
Incriminating material including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All these materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other militancy related crimes.
