Twist in the tale
2/23/2020 11:30:03 PM

The Union Minister announcing that domicile law for J&K is coming very soon and jobs would be announced in abundance for the youth in newly carved out J&K UT is a welcome announcement.
The talk about the domicile law has been going on for the past many months. But till date this law hasn’t come. At one point of the time the UT administration had hinted that the power to make such a law vests with the Legislative Assembly and people will have to wait till the elections are held and the assembly is constituted.
It seems now there is a twist in the tale as the voices in Jammu region to have a domicile law like Himachal at place in J&K have become shriller in the past few months.
The opposition parties in Jammu region since the abrogation of Article 370 have been rallying around a point that special law needs to be put in place to safeguard the identity, culture and land of the J&K people. The local BJP leaders are feeling the pinch and they seem to have realized that if they are unable to push the Centre to come with a domicile law for J&K UT it will make things difficult for the saffron party in the forthcoming assembly elections.
The BJP had won 25 out of 37 assembly seats in 2014. Now the delimitation has already been announced and the number of assembly constituencies in Jammu region is all set to increase. There is every possibility about J&K’s new chief minister hailing from Jammu region. During the past 70-years, Kashmir centric politicians didn’t allow any Dogra to become a chief minister as the assembly seats in the Valley were always on the higher side.
If the BJP wants to cobble up the numbers again in Jammu then it will have to do something out of box. Its leaders in J&K are already on the weak wicket as many people believe that they were unable to perform when they got a chance to be a part of the government in 2015.
The BJP ministers becoming inaccessible and running away from the electorate during their three and a half year stint in power disappointed everyone in Jammu region. These leaders during the election campaign in 2014 had promised that they would become the true voices of Jammu region but they failed to do so.
If BJP has to regain its foothold in Jammu then it will have to work very hard to convince the people that it won’t repeat the mistakes which it committed in the past.
