To check internet misuse in Kashmir, cyber cell of police to expand network
2/23/2020 11:32:59 PM
ET Report

Srinagar, Feb 23: In a bid to intensify the checks on misuse of internet by terror groups or their sympathizers in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Police are mulling to expand the operations of its cyber cell in the trouble-torn region.
In the wake of use of smart phone applications like VPN to make provocative or anti-India posts on the social media and use of such platforms for communication between terror groups, the JKP has come up with a proposal to augment the network of police on cyber duty.
Sources said the JKP looks ahead to expand its network of cops keeping eye on the internet traffic especially on the social media.
Sources said presently a handful of police officials operating from the Special Operations Group office also called Cargo in Srinagar look after the job. “But given the sea of information that needs to be checked, we look ahead to expand our base,” said a police official on the condition of anonymity.
He said the police department was preparing a proposal to augment the services on this front. “The proposal in underway and suggestions are pouring in. We look ahead to draft a formal proposal in the coming weeks,” said the official.
After a clampdown on internet services in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the valley on August 5, 2019, in the wake of abrogation of the special status, the digital network was restored to 2 G level on the intervention of the Supreme Court in January 2020.
But even though there were restrictions on the use of social media, many were using VPN to defy the diktats.
As per the police, some had been posting provocative and objectionable content on the social media.
While some people have been booked for such offences, the police look ahead to intensity the operations against such forces.
