Despite claims of advancement Khag yet to have SDH facility, huge population pushed to wall

SRINAGAR, Feb 27: Despite claims about advanced health-care facilities Khag tehsil has been deprived of a sub-district hospital (SDH). The absence of SDH is creating multiple problems for the people living in the tehsil.
While rest of tehsil headquarters in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir are having the facility of SDH the people of Khag in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district have been denied the same thus putting the people to trouble.
Sources said that at present Khag is having a redundant primary health center (PHC) where there are only seven doctors to look after people living in 70 odd villages comprising a population of more than 60,000.
“For the past many years people of Khag and adjoining villages like Drung, Gugaldara, Sutaharan, Habber, Shonglipora, Sugin, Poshkar, Dalwash, Surish, Naserpora, Malpora, Sharan, Koker Bagh, Khanpora, Fojipora, Saidwan and Traphy have been yearning for SDH as the primary health center is lacking all the adequate facilities,” said sources.
Sources said that even for minor injuries, people have to move to Srinagar for treatment. The locals question the utility of National Health Mission (NHM) scheme, which states that medicare facilities will be provided to people at their doorsteps.
“People face more problems during winter as the far flung villages remain cut off from the tehsil head quarter. Politicians come here to obtain votes with the promise of providing us SDH but none among them has taken a practical step in this regard so far. The issue has been raised many times in the past but nothing has been done so far,” said sources.
Sources said that the residents face problems in shifting patients to Srinagar hospitals as most of the population of the area is poor and a lot of money is spent on travel.“Khag is a hilly area and most of the population lives below poverty line. If all the facilities were available here then there was no need to move to other hospitals of the valley.”
Sources said that the Khag health centre has no children specialist, surgeon, gynecologist, orthopedician and ophthalmologist. They said that PHC Khag is without equipment facilities like USG, ECG and modern dentist chair.
They said that few years back the administrative department moved a file for up-gradation of PHC Khag upto the level of Community Health Centre (CHC), but that is still pending in administrative section.
“The PHC Khag not only lacks the proper medical facilities but the center is without proper lighting and heating system. There is no lighting in this primary center and doctors’ work under dim light. During evening hours they make use of candles and mobile torches since the generator is non-functional,” said sources.
Sources said that there isn’t any heating system inside the center and people have to bear the cold during the winter season. They said that solar lighting system worth 14 lakhs was put in place at the hospital, but the batteries of the system were stolen before its use by unknown persons.
