4/4/2020 12:18:09 AM

UDHAMPUR, Apr 3: Even as threat of deadly COVID-19 pandemic is hovering around and those in the line of duty in this hour of crisis are more prone to infection, the fate of as many as 184 Safai Karamcharis working in three different Municipalities of district Udhampur hang in balance as they are not insured and not even provided with proper working kits.
David, a leader of these Safai Karamcharis in Udhampur, informed that hundreds of Safai Karamcharis are performing their duty with utmost sincerity and dedication without thinking that their lives are at grave risk due to the lurking threat of coronavirus pandemic but sorry to say the facilities provided to them are negligible.
“We have been given only masks and sanitizers. No proper uniforms, gloves and shoes have been provided while the insurance which is most important of all has been denied to us,” said David.
Another leader of Safai Karamcharis at Chenani, whose name is Bittu, had similar complaint to make. He demanded proper uniform for the men and women engaged for cleanliness jobs.
“We spray disinfectants to sanitize the area and also ambulances without uniform, gloves and proper shoes,” he said adding that only masks and sanitizers have been provided to them.
Similarly, Khem Raj, leader of Safai Karamcharis at Ramnagar informed that masks and sanitizers are given to them but no proper gloves, shoes were provided even uniform has been provided to only few Safai Karamcharis.
He appealed to higher authorities to provide proper working kits to sanitation staff.
Sources informed that there are about 140 Safai Karamcharis in Udhampur town, 10 in Chenani and 34 in Ramnagar.
Senior leader of these Safai Karamcharis, Lucky informed that it is not only in district Udhampur where Safai Karamcharis have been denied working kits but the sanitation staff even in other districts of Union Territory of J&K are being treated on similar lines.
He said that concerned CEOs, EOs and other officials are not issuing proper working kits to the Safai Karmacharis though the same have been released from higher authorities.
“We appeal to Director Urban and Local Bodies Jammu Division to look into the matter and instruct the concerned CEOs and EOs to provide proper working kits like masks, sanitizers, gloves, uniforms and shoes to the sanitation staff keeping in view the situation arisen out of COVID-19 pandemic’s spread,” said Lucky.
