The outbreak of COVID-19 in the country has provided a chance to mischief mongers and miscreants to spread fake news. Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has been no exception.
In Kashmir region a few miscreants even created the fake twitter accounts of J&K UT spokesman Rohit Kansal and were using these to spread misinformation. Police arrested two persons in Kashmir recently for misusing the social media. Recently State run Information Department launched a website to stop fake news.
The mischief mongers who have indulged in spreading fake news have done a big disservice to the country in this hour of crisis. This has pushed the media houses, which are working against all odds, on the back foot. The circulation of fake news has slowed down the flow of information in these difficult times.
People who are indulging in this mischievous propaganda should realize that this is not the time to play pranks. Entire country is passing through very turbulent times and no one has got any idea about how long this pandemic will last. Till date scientists have not been able to find any vaccine or medicine which can treat this virus. The only way to protect ourselves is to take precautions and stay at home. But staying at home doesn’t mean that we will spread rumours through social media and create confusion. It is shameful that some people are putting pictures of people on the social media and are terming them as COVID-19 suspects or COVID-19 patients. Such acts are making all of us hang our heads in shame.
It looks like that some people have not realized the gravity of the situation and are thinking that the lockdown is nation-wide holiday and after it ends life will return to normal. These people should realize that the threat of COVID-19 is far from over as the positive cases are increasing at a rapid pace across the country. This is the time to introspect why entire humanity is in so much of trouble. This is not the time to make fun of each other and mock at the government. People who are trying to handle the crisis are human beings like us. They are working overtime to keep us safe. Doctors and other members of the medical fraternity are asking us to stay at home but they are putting their lives at stake and are working 24x7. Let’s show some respect towards their dedication and act as responsible citizens.
