Helping each other only way out
4/8/2020 10:35:54 PM
Affluent across the world are coming forward to help the needy people as the outbreak of COVID-19 has wreaked havoc and ahs brought all the activities to a grinding halt.
President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament have opted for 30% pay cut for one year. Even the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, G C Murmu, has announced that he will donate his 30% salary for one year towards COVID-19 relief fund.
All of us are aware of the fact that the COVID-19 has blown into a full-fledged economic crisis and there is no other way out except lending a helping hand to each other to come out from this unprecedented situation.
Questions are being raised over the silence being maintained by the former legislators of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State. These former law makers had hefty salary packages and incentives but it seems they are in no mood to come forward and help the needy. It looks like that they believe their political careers have ended and they may not be able to make it to the legislature again, so it’s better to save whatever they can save. None of the former J&K legislators coming forward to lend a helping hand has not surprised many people their reaction has been on expected lines. When Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the worst floods of the century in 2014, legislators were the first ones to flee J&K. But that time they were safer zones where they could go. This time around COVID-19 has turned every zone unsafe.
Anyway, the people, who can help the needy should stop looking towards the former legislators. They should come forward and do their bit as the COVID-19 positive cases are increasing rapidly. And it seems that lockdown will continue till the COVID-19 curve is flattened. Till things start moving we will have to keep on helping the people, who are finding it difficult to survive in these tough times. Charity begins at home. We need to begin from our areas and mohallas. In the present circumstances it doesn’t make sense to move from one area to another, but within our areas we can do something.
The government too needs to act and without going into much details it needs to come up with a mechanism to ensure that people don’t starve. We are fighting an epidemic and it’s an uphill task.
