J&K parliamentarians couldn’t utilize MPLADS funds

Jammu, Apr 10: Parliamentarians from Jammu and Kashmir have shown a dismal performance to utilize Member Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS ) funds.
The Union government in abid to fight the COVID-19 outbreak has decided to divert the MPLADS funds towards Consolidated Fund of India, which will be used to purchase equipments for medical facilities, to develop medical infrastructure, testing and screening of patients. These funds won’t be available with the MPs until 2022.
According to the data available with Early Times, the Lok Sabha members have so far failed to utilize the maximum of the funds allocated and released to them. All the Lok Sabha MPs are entitled to Rs 5 Crore as their constituency development fund out of which Rs 2.5 Crore stand released in favour of each parliamentarian including Dr. Jatinder Singh, Jugal Kishore Sharma, Hasnain Masoodi, Mohammad Akbar Lone and Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
Apart from Dr Farooq Abdullah who has Rs. 3.55 crore, all other MPs have Rs 2.50 crore of funds available with interest.
Out of these available MPLADS funds, only Dr Jatinder Singh and Dr. Farooq Abdullah have recommended Rs 1.93 crore and Rs 1.14 crore of the cumulative amount for various MPLADS works. The remaining MPs have not recommended any funds for any work in their constituencies, the data reveals.
Out of the cumulative amount sanctioned by both the MPs, Dr Jatinder Singh has sanctioned an amount of Rs. 1.13 Crores while Dr Farooq Abdullah has sanctioned Rs. 1.14 crore out of which only an amount of Rs. 5 Lakhs has been spend from the quota of both the MPs.
Most of the parliamentarians have maximum of the unspent balance with Rs. 2.45 Crores in the quota of Dr Jatinder Singh, Rs. 2.50 Crores each with Hasnain Masoodi, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Jugal Kishore Sharma and Rs. 3.50 Crores with Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
Whereas the performance of Member Parliament from Rajya Sabha is better as compared to their counterparts in Lok Sabha. Shamsher Singh Manhas has utilized 89.23 percent of the funds, Gulam Nabi Azad utilized 75.32 percent of funds, Mir Mohammad Fayaz utilized 90.2 percent of total funds and Nazir Ahmed Laway utilized 84.48 percent of the total funds.
