Step up efforts to address people’s problems: Munish tells admin
Dilapidated roads, piles of garbage irk residents of Sector-4, Guru Nanak Nagar

Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 31: Editor-in-Chief, Early Times, Munish Gupta said that the administration needs to identify core areas to augment basic amenities in order to enhance quality of life in various localities of Jammu city.
“The administration should make all the facilities available to the people. These include provision of better lanes and drains as well as proper hygienic conditions in the residential areas. It must step up the efforts to address problems of the urban population,” said Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency.
Munish said that the foremost priority with the government is to improve the existing infrastructure in different colonies so that Jammu city could come at par with other major cities of the country.
“Localities like Sector-4 in Guru Nanak Nagar area are still suffering in absence of proper civic services. The condition of the area is pathetic as the interior roads have turned into rubble while the drains are choked with garbage. Sanitation of the area is also in poor state.
All these deficiencies in an urban area reflect that Jammu has to cover a long distance to be categorized as a Smart City in a real sense,” said Munish.
Meanwhile, residents of Sector-4, Guru Nanak Nagar while speaking to Early Times said that the poor condition of the interior roads is irksome experience for those residing in the locality while the clogged drains and poor sanitary conditions are also irritating for them
“The interior roads including by-lanes have deteriorated beyond recognition.
They are no more than the pieces of rubble. We made several requests for the repair of the roads but no action was initiated by the concerned authorities,” said the residents. “The interior roads act like arteries for the locality but have been neglected for far too long. It’s time the authorities woke up to the needs of people living in the area,” they added.
Several others complained about the poor drainage system of their locality saying that the drains are completely choked but the authorities never bother to desilt them so that the disposal of sewage doesn’t get affected. “Choked drains and overflowing sewage in different parts is one of the major problems being faced by us. Sewage stagnating in drains is troubling the residents. Due to the persistent blockage sewage doesn’t flow properly through the network of drains which emanates foul smell. But what has upset the locals more is the alleged inaction on part of the authorities,” said inhabitants of the area. Few others said, “Trash dumped along the roads entre the drains and hardly removed. Besides, due to poor waste disposal system in our locality, the condition of the drains has become pathetic and they have been stinking for several months now.”
Another issue that has caused the residents a lot of inconveniences is the open dumping of garbage in the area.
“The garbage dumps lie next to the houses in which we live. We can see the stinking pile and the flies but can’t do much about it. We can’t even open our doors and windows due to the stench. We keep complaining to the authorities but they do not pay heed to our grievances,” the residents lamented.
