Amid surge in Covid-19 infections, BJP continues to hold public meetings
Restrictions only for opposition, not for BJP and its sister organizations
6/3/2020 11:25:44 PM

JAMMU, June 3: After holding political meetings and birthday celebrations at Guest House Billawar the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders have refused to obey administration by repeatedly holding public meetings and the latest one is held in Akhnoor.
This meeting in Akhnoor was held in the backdrop of huge surge in the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Jammu as well as across the country. But enjoying power at Centre and in UT through the Central government, the local BJP leaders have refused to pay any heed towards restrictions on public gatherings.
As per press release issued to media, the BJP Kissan Morcha district Akhnoor organized a meeting at panchayat Ambara of Akhnoor. Several leaders of the party from Akhnoor including Parbari of Kissan Morcha, State President, State Secretary, District President of Kissan Morcha beside other leaders were present.
It is claimed that sanitizers and face masks were distributed among the present people but majority of the people were from their own party and not the common people of the area, to whom these items were distributed.
Moreover, the distribution of these items was a cosmetic exercise to evade criticism for organizing a political meeting at a time, when COVID-19 infections have been increasing and government has not issuing permissions to organize public meetings.
Though the people in the photographs circulated on the media, could be seen sitting on the chairs but there is hardly two feet distance between two chairs. “While clicking the photographs, the present people could be made to sit according to social distancing norms, but when the political meetings begun as well as conclude, there are least possibilities that social distancing norms could be followed”, an insider said, adding that people were least bothered about maintaining social distancing norms, during such meetings.
“Government is aware of the fact that while holding such meetings, social distancing norms could not be followed, so it has banned such activities but for BJP leaders no such ban is there as rules seemed to be only for opposition parties”, a politician said.
The politician further said that though the audience could be seen maintaining social-distancing during the meeting but the leaders present at the stage, could be found openly flouting social distancing norms. “Even face masks could be found hanging in their necks and leaders could be seen shoulder to shoulder with each other. It is still unknown, why BJP leaders have been taking the increasing infection rate so lightly, and they are only concerned about their vote bank while jeopardizing the health of a large number of workers”, the politician said, adding that the government should issued orders and allow all other political parties to organize political programmes and not only the BJP.
“Restricting only the opposition parties to hold political meetings while allowing BJP leaders to hold meetings is giving a wrong message to the public and is against the democratic spirit of the country as the law should be equal for each citizen and not be biased”, the politician said.
