PCB reprimands MC Rajouri for dumping garbage in Salani river
Years on, MC fails to set up Solid Water Treatment Plant

EARLY TIMES REPORT

RAJOURI, July 3: The Pollution Control Board (PCB) has reprimanded the Municipal Council (MC) Rajouri for creating air and water pollution by dumping garbage collected from the city municipal area along Salani river and termed it as a sheer violation of the pollution control rules.
The incompetence of the Municipal Council Rajouri can be gauged from the fact that it has failed to identify land for the dumping garbage, which is generated on a regular basis from Municipal areas and even could not set up a solid waste treatment plant as a permanent solution to the garbage disposal.
Sources told Early Times that the vehicles of MC Rajouri carrying garbage dump it just near the Salani Bridge on its bank, which create water pollution as well as present a bad picture of the area. “Taking cognizance of the nuisance, PCB issued warnings to the Executive Officer, MC Rajouri to restrict itself from dumping garbage near the river but later continued to make violations,” they said.
They further said that MC employees also burn this garbage, which creates huge air pollution, which include plastic, rubber and creates thick smoke around the area making it difficult for vehicular movement.
“Around 10 days ago, a huge dump of garbage near the bridge was set on fire by MC employees due to which the smoke emanating from it spread around half a kilometre making it almost invisible for the people passing through the road. In fact people living around the areas also go for walks near this point, which can create health issues to them,” they added.
Locals alleged that the Rajouri District, which is popularly known as land of kings has been converted into land of garbage by the MC Rajouri. Astonishingly despite highlighting the issue in several news dailies, the MC Rajouri continuously is making violations by dumping garbage at the same place.
Sources informed that PCB issued a verbal request to MC Rajouri regarding illegal dumping of garbage on the river side and directed it to dump the garbage by digging pits in order to save the environment and human beings living nearby it.
“Due to continuous contempt of our directions, PCB will be compelled to write a complaint to National Green Tribunal (NGT) for the stringent action against MC Rajouri and heavy fine lakhs will be imposed against it,” an official of PCB told Early Times.
When contacted, the Executive Officer, MC Rajouri said that the land for dumping garbage has been identified and soon the new site will be put to use.
