Hr Edu Deptt indecisive about taking call about college students
Amid various suggestions, dept awaits MHRD’s nod to take a final call

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, July 3: The Higher Education department is still indecisive about taking a call about the college going students enrolled in various semesters of three year degree course, whose exams were not held due to lockdown announced by government following the COVID-19 threat in the month of March.
Amid various suggestions pouring in from various stakeholders, the Higher Education department has reportedly been awaiting for the nod of Ministry of Human Resource Development about deciding the future of students, enrolled in colleges across the state, so that the students would not face any hurdle in future.
After the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has announced the results of various Board classes including 12th, the college going students have been pinning hopes that their results would also be announced on the pattern of Board exams as exams of some subjects in these classes were also not held.
Sources in the Higher Education department informed Early Times said, “It was suggested to the department for promoting the Semester 2nd and Semester 4th students on the basis of their previous academic performance, while the Semester 6th students should be promoted after taking online exams”, sources said.
Sources further disclosed that it was also suggested that the students should be promoted on the basis of internal assessment tests.
“The internal assessment tests are also not conducted in majority of the colleges for the students of all the semesters including 2nd, 4th and 6th before the announcement of lockdown”, sources said, adding that in view of the fact it was suggested that proportional marks should be given to the students on the basis of their previous performance in the 1st and 3rd semester exams”, sources said, adding that it was also suggested to the department to conduct online assessment tests but given the slow internet connectivity as well as poor attendance in the online classes conducted by colleges, there were remote possibilities to rely on this mode also.
“The poor attendance in online classes as well as the availability of the hardware including smartphones, laptops or desktops, the department feel it not viable to conduct online internal assessment exams”, sources said, adding that even if the online internet assessment exams would be conducted the colleges lack infrastructure to evaluate the exams.
Director Colleges Yaseen Shah said that the department has been awaiting MHRD’s decision to take a final call on the future of students studying in various semesters. He further said that the top priority of the department was the safety of staff as well as students. “It is also on the priority of the department that the precious time of students, which they spend in various semester will not be wasted”, Shah said.
