PDP jumps into chorus as SMC’s mayoral fiasco turns shriller
Main contender for Mayor position busy holding parleys, gather maximum support for floor test
7/4/2020 12:06:43 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, July 3: The mayoral position at Srinagar Municipal Corporation may see yet another turn of events as PDP is insidiously readying itself to support Sheikh Imran- an arch rival of former Mayor Junaid Matoo- ousted last month from his position.
On June 16, this year, in a dramatic development, Mattu lost the trust vote after 40 corporators voted in favour of the no-confidence motion during a special session convened here at banquet hall. Out of 70 councilors, 40 corporators have voted against Mattoo. Interestingly, some corporators from NC also voted in favour of the motion, prompting Mattu to level serious allegations against the party. The corporators from Peoples Conference and Congress abstained from the proceedings as part of their strategy to defeat the no-confidence motion. In a series of tweets, Mattu said that the National Conference and Bharatiya Janta Party joined hands to succeed with no-confidence against him.
Former deputy mayor of Srinagar Sheikh Imran is now being viewed as a main contender of the mayoral position in the corporation. The incumbent as per the reports is striving hard to turn the situation in his favour and gather as much support as he can in his kitty for the crucial time which seems to be in the offing.
In a drastic turn of events, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is mulling to support Imran in his contest for the position of SMC mayor.
Sources divulged that the corporators who have affiliations with the PDP have been asked to get prepared for supporting Imran and help him win the floor test scheduled to take place any time soon.
As per the reports, Imran has been holding a series of meetings with senior PDP leaders and close aides of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti. “The outcome is going to be crucial. The PDP shall have control over the corporation and will have a major say in its overall functioning,” said a source privy to the ongoing development.
In May, this year, in a tweet Sheikh Imran alleged, “Illegal construction going on even in COVID at Mir mohalla malaratta padan opp. Al munawar plaza. Allegedly ward officers involved have paid their bosses in SMC. Why is chief enforcement silent? ” said the ousted deputy mayor while demanding an end to illegal constructions forthwith and an impartial probe. He also made startling revelations that “money has changed hands” in SMC which has emboldened the violators to raise illegal constructions during the pandemic lockdown.
Earlier in 2018, former Sheikh Imran after getting Congress’s support won the position of deputy mayor in Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
