Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 6: In a major setback to the separatist sentiment, two of the most popular nationalist slogans –Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata Ki Jai reverberated in Kashmir on the first anniversary of the abrogation of the special status of J&K.
While a woman leader of the Bharatiya Janta Party unfurled tricolor in south Kashmir, in the summer capital, the BJP hosted a special program.
At the event held at the BJP head office in Jawahar Nagar locality here, the party leaders ensured chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Vande Mataram.
The event was led by senior BJP leader Altaf Thakur who led by celebrations. The BJP leaders also distributed sweets in the area.
At another event in Kashmir valley, the BJP leaders danced on a Bhojpuri number. Both men and a woman associated with the party danced together to mark the celebrations.
It’s for the first time in the last thirty odd years of militancy in Kashmir that such nationalist events were held in Kashmir.
The BJP leaders went ahead with such celebrations braving the so called threat of the terror outfits.
It is pertinent to mention that in the past around a month, at least three persons associated with the right wing party have been killed in Kashmir.
Senior BJP leader Wasim Bari was killed along with his brother and father in Bandipora area of north Kashmir.
On the eve of the first anniversary of the abrogation of the special status, a BJP leader was killed in south Kashmir whereas two grenades were lobbed in the apple town of Shopian.
Observers said the winds of change were visible in Kashmir that people are fed up of militancy and want to fully integrate with the nation.
“Earlier people in Kashmir were apprehensive about chanting slogans like Vande Mataram and Bharati Mata Ki Jai, but now they openly chant it with pride and even dance on Bhojpuri numbers. The message is clear, Kashmir has integrated with India,” said a political analyst.
