SRINAGAR, Aug 7: Manoj Sinha today formally took over as Lieutenant Governor of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir after he was administered oath of office at the Raj Bhavan here in the afternoon. Sinha is the second LG of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir and he replaces G C Murmu who resigned on Wednesday.
Sinha was administered oath by Chief Justice, Jammu & Kashmir High Court, Justice Gita Mittal. Minister of State (MOS) in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr. Jitendra Singh along with the advisors, Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam, Director General Jammu & Kashmir Police, Dilbagh Singh and other senior civil as well as police officers were present on the occasion. Some politicians belonging to Bharatiya Janta Party were also present.
Talking to select group of journalists the newly appointed LG said that his priority would be zero tolerance for corruption, taking forward the developmental initiatives launched during the last one year and establishing dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that Jammu and Kashmir embarked on a new journey on 5th of August 2019, when it was fully integrated with the Union of India, ending a long era of isolation, discrimination and lack of development.
“Because of its geographical, climatic, cultural and ethnic diversity, Jammu & Kashmir is like a colourful bouquet and truly called the crown of India,” he said. He said that he would take the developmental agenda forward without discrimination with any section or region. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have suffered a lot in the past. The new dawn promises hope, optimism, and bright future for them, he added.
“J&K has also achieved tremendous results in some of the programmes and schemes during the last one year, I have learnt. I am hopeful that I will be able to carry forward the agenda of development, inclusiveness and restoration of peace in the UT of J&K, which has been initiated in the last one year”, he said.
The LG said that he would like to see Jammu & Kashmir free from militancy and isolation. “We will work within the framework of the Constitution of India to take J&K towards inclusive development and peace. We will also initiate dialogue with the masses to have a better understanding of their problems and issues, and will try to address the same”, he said.
I assure the people of J&K that I will try to come up to their expectations and take J&K forward on the vision and mission of making this UT a model to emulate, he added.
A three-time Member of Parliament, Sinha served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Communications and Minister of State for Railways in the previous term of the Narendra Modi government. However, he lost his Ghazipur seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
Sinha has been credited with ensuring the completion of projects within set timelines during his time as Minister. Several people who know Sinha and have worked with him said, “He gets work delivered within the stipulated time, and has a very congenial style of working. He is always accessible to both officers and the public. He is a quick decision maker.”
In the first week of July 2016, when Sinha assumed the charge of the Telecom Ministry, the immediate task at hand was to achieve the target of BharatNet by connecting 1 lakh villages by broadband Internet by end of December 2017. He ensured that the target was achieved, delivering on a task that had been pending since 2014.
Sinha also applied himself to dealing effectively with the menace of call drops. It was during his tenure that the much awaited India Post Payment Bank was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2018.As MoS Railways, Sinha was assigned to look after the implementation of railway projects in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which he again delivered on time.
Sinha, 61, has a B. Tech in civil engineering from the Institute of Technology, BHU, Varanasi. Born on July 1, 1959 in Mohanpura in the district of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, Sinha did his schooling under the UP board of education before going to IT-BHU. At university, he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP.
