JK to remain UT for now, hints Chief Secy
Reading between the lines

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 8: What could possibly dash the expectations of few Kashmir centric political parties was the recent interaction of Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam with the media persons.
As Omar Abdullah and his ilk were demanding restoration of statehood, threatening that they wouldn’t be contesting polls if the statehood isn’t given back to Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Secretary has subtly hinted that the erstwhile state would continue to remain a Union Territory for now.
“Three stages of transition have been going on in J&K. They are transition from Jammu and Kashmir Constitution to Indian Constitution, bifurcation of the state and then transition from state to UT. There have been lots of changes. Separation of three lakh employees was done in just 15 days. The UT rules were made. We had to prepare budget for five months from October 30 to March 31. Then again budget from April for the whole financial year. Division of assets and liabilities have not been finalised yet,” the CS was quoted by the reports as having said.
He also added that taking Jammu and Kashmir back on track and feeing it from the menace of corruption will take time. “There was a terrible situation here. Things were designed for corruption. Mis-governance and corruption were for so long that the system has collapsed from inside. The whole state was a big ponzi scheme,” he said.
Meanwhile, the statement of such an important nature has given enough hints that Jammu and Kashmir’s dispensation is in a complete reboot mode and that there are no proposals in hand at present for turning the recently declared UT again a full-fledged state.
Pertinent to mention that Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a curfew in many parts of the state after amending the law to take away its autonomy and statehood. Many viewed it as pre-emptive move to check protests in the restive region.
More than 4,000 people, including politicians of opposition groups, human rights activists and separatists were detained.
Schools, universities, colleges and government offices remained all shut. Home Minister Amit Shah in one of his interviews however didn’t comment in detail about incarceration of the political leaders in the state durum his recent interview, stating that there apprehensions that those who had been detained could incite people for violence and disrupt public order.
He also cited the example of NC Founder Sheikh Abdullah, stating that it was Congress government that jailed Sheikh Abdullah for no less than 11 long years.
According to Shah, the BJP government should not be blamed for doing anything unconstitutional as everything was being done to maintain peace and calm in Kashmir.
