Vicharnagh Asthapan shrine- a victim of official neglect, apathy
8/11/2020 12:17:47 AM

JAMMU, Aug 10: Once a pious seat of learned Brahmans across Jammu and Kashmir, who used to finalize ‘panchang’ for the new year, the historic Vicharnagh Asthapan shrine popularly known as ‘Vichar Saheb’ situated near SKIMS, Soura in Srinagar has lost its pristine glory with the passage of time.
The shrine has become continuous victim of complete neglect and official apathy for the last over three decades.
The shrine is registered as Trust Asthapan Vicharnagh in official records of Jammu and Kashmir Government and has had an executive body of office bearers headed by an elected president until the migration of KPs due to breakout of armed insurgency way back in 1989-90.
Some years ago an organization under the name and style of Samajik Vikas Sansthan (SVS) headed by a US based doctor MK Razdan, who claimed to have renovated and reconstructed several Hindu temples and shrines in Valley, had approached the Trust executive body for initiating the restoration process for Vicharnag Asthapan shrine.
The Trust headed by DK Dhar agreed to allow SVS to undertake the reconstruction and renovation work of the Vicharnagh Asthapan. However, after some time there were some issues between the two and the developmental work of the shrine was stopped and since then the shrine continues to be in shambles, the sources informed Early Times. Presently the entire premises of the ‘Vichar Saheb’ is waterlogged and the sanctum sanctorum is also submerged in water, this was stated by a visiting delegation of Samajik Vikas Sansthan (SVS) headed by Sunil Tickoo who shared his views with Early Times, adding that there being no proper channel of water exit due to encroachment of surrounding land of the shrine, as a result it gives out foul smell in the area and the holy spring which is natural has turned into a virtual ditch.
“I personally feel pained when I came through the deteriorating condition of this shrine,” Sunil Tickoo said, adding our team is voluntarily and constantly working to restore the lost glory of shrines in Kashmir after the migration of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley, we have renovated several shrines and temples in Kashmir valley which were later on handed over to their authorized trusts after completion of work, he added.
