EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, Aug 13: Despite spending huge amounts on various flagship schemes, the Jal Shakti department has failed to provide safe drinking water to many areas including Ashmuji of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
According to local residents of Ashmuji village of Kulgam district of south Kashmir, villagers are forced to fetch water from nullah for their daily needs, as the water that is being supplied by the Jal Shakti (PHE) department is contaminated.
There are scores of villages in Kulgam district including Ashmuji and its adjacent areas like Bhan, Mah, Mahgund and other areas that don’t have the facility of safe drinking water.
Though the water is being supplied on a daily basis, it is unfiltered due to which there are chances of outbreak of some diseases, locals cautioned.
They said, “Sometimes women have to travel miles to fetch some water from tube wells or bore wells, as it seems the water pipes have dried up due to dust and rust, as unfiltered water is being supplied to our areas, authorities should do something in order to provide clean drinking water in Ashmuji village”.
Our women have to travel many miles to fetch safe drinking water for our daily requirements. Some fetch water from the local wells that are also not safe for drinking due to being rich in Iron substances.
Mubashir from Ashmuji told Early Times that unfiltered water is being forced to drink and the department of Jal Shakti is least bothered about our health maintenance.
Many times in past, almost from one year we have been approaching the department concerned, but they are in deep slumber.
We don’t know where the water is supplied, but the condition of water seems that the department is filling their reservoirs from local rivers and nullahs.
Sources further said that the department concerned has failed to provide clean water, despite the fact that, over the years vital flagship schemes of the GoI were aimed at providing safe drinking water to rural population, but nothing has worked till date in a proper way.
