Anantnag, Aug 13: Already grappling with shortage of space and basic facilities, the Maternity and Child Care Hospital (M&CCH) Anantnag is now facing an acute shortage of doctors as at least six junior doctors have resigned in the last two weeks.
Official sources revealed to Early Times that the doctors posted at Maternity and Child Care Hospital (M&CCH) Anantnag were also allegedly denying treatment to pregnant women who reached the health facility from far off areas of the district.
“Doctors refused to treat patients from rural areas of Anantnag. Instead of providing treatment to poor pregnant ladies they are referred to nearby Primary Health Centre,” official sources said.
They claimed that at multiple occasions’ patients and their attendants protested against the refusal of doctors to treat the pregnant women.
An official posted at MCH Anantnag justified the decision and said that pregnant women must avail treatment at Primary Health Centers and Sub-District Hospitals instead of visiting MCCH Anantnag. “Patients referred from Sub-District Hospitals to MCH Anantnag are being treated,” he said.
Officials said that the hospital was facing acute shortage of doctors as at least six junior doctors have resigned during the last two weeks.
“Our doctors and paramedical staff are hard-pressed. They are working for long hours. Most importantly, they are getting tired and mentally drained. We need more staff to fill the gap and ease the existing staff,” they said.
Officials said that the hospital was facing a shortage of junior resident doctors, senior resident doctors and medical officers. “MCCH Anantnag has just 22 doctors while the requirement is more than 60,” they added.
Principal Medical College Anantnag, Dr Showket Jeelani said that he was unaware about the resignations tendered by junior doctors. “I am not aware if they (Junior Doctors) have resigned. We will quickly fill the vacant posts and provide adequate staff to the hospital for better patient care,” he said.
From past several years, the MCCH Anantnag continues to hog headlines for all wrong reasons mostly due to space crunch and lack of facilities that causes death of pregnant women.
