Militants strike at Gulshan Nagar-Nogwam, kill two police personnel

SRINAGAR, Aug 14: Two Jammu & Kashmir Police personnel were martyred while as one jawan was injured after militants attacked them at Nowgam in the outskirts of Srinagar today in the morning. The incident took place a day before the Independence Day.
Reports said that some militants appeared at Gulshan Nagar, Nowgam early in the morning and carried out an attack on the police personnel posted there. The police personnel were caught off guard and three personnel sustained injuries in the attack. As they were being shifted to the hospital two among them died en-route.
Immediately after the militant attack the lanes as well as by-lanes leading towards the Gulshan Nagar were sealed by the security agencies in order to nab the militants. However, the militants could not be arrested and they managed to escape after carrying out the attack. The Gulshan Nagar falls quite adjacent to the highway connecting Kashmir valley with Jammu.
A police spokesman said that at about 9:30 AM militants fired indiscriminately upon a joint naka party of police and security forces at Gulshan Nagar area of Nowgam Srinagar. In the incident, three police personnel sustained grievous gunshot injuries and were evacuated to hospital for the treatment of their injuries.
“However, two injured identified as Fayaz Ahmad and Ishfaq Ayoub of IRP 20th Bn succumbed to their injuries and attained martyrdom. Police has registered a case under relevant sections of law in this regard. Investigation is in progress. Area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on to nab the militants,” said the spokesman.
As soon as body of Ishfaq reached his home at Maloora-Shalteng in the outskirts of Srinagar, a pall of gloom descended on the whole area. Family members and other relatives of the deceased cop were shell shocked and women could be seen beating their chests while wailing over the death of their dear one. Fayaz’s body was taken to his native village at Devsar-Kulgam and handed over to his relatives.
A wreath lying ceremony was held in Armed Police Complex Humhama, where floral tributes were paid to the deceased police personnel. R R Bhatnagar advisor to LG J&K led civil and police officers in paying tributes and laying floral wreath on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the martyrs.
