Revamp basic facility in Govt hospitals: UDA

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 19: Expressing its concern over staff crunch and lack of basic infrastructural facilities /medicines in winter capital of UT, the Convenor of United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Jammu and Kashmir, Rajiv Mahajan today urged the state administration to take immediate measures to save the lives of the people in the region.
Interacting with media persons, Rajiv Mahajan said that government hospitals were opened in the city with the object to provide better healthcare facilities to the residents but all these hospitals are without facilities, including enough storage of medicines, making people jittery about the claims of the government that all is well on health sector in Jammu region.
He expressed serious concern over the higher number of casualties of old age persons and youth in government hospitals in Jammu during past two months and sought immediate steps to ascertain causes behind these casualties with urgent corrective measures to prevent further loss of precious lives.
Due to the pandemic, there is a lot of pressure upon the healthcare and medical facilities in the city. So, at this time there is a need to keep a proper check upon the functioning of the hospitals, especially GMC Jammu. The hospital authorities should themselves be responsible for providing proper healthcare and medical facilities.
J&K seems to be fighting a losing battle against Corona as the number of positive cases is surging every passing day, he said, adding that the J & K government has run out of options and has failed to tackle the pandemic.
“The government should have strengthened the public health system on a war-footing basis during the lockdown period, but unfortunately its priorities lied on other development projects. All these point to the all-round failure of the government in tackling the pandemic. It looks as if the government has run out of options and is reconciled to the pandemic running its course,” he rued.
“The government should increase beds with high-flow oxygen in hospitals at the earliest. The government must also purchase more ventilators to augment the capacity of hospitals. There is also an urgent need for staff that can run ICUs and high-dependency units,” he said. “A strategy is immediately needed to control the spread of coronavirus cases in the union territory following a sharp rise in infections,” said Rajiv, adding, Jammu region must immediately go into lockdown for at least 15 days.
He said that contrary to claims of J&K Government that all is well in the health sector, the condition of Associated Hospitals of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu is pathetic and only immediate intervention of Lt Governor could save this lifeline of Jammu region’s healthcare from turning into lifeless institutions.
