Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Oct 17: A prestigious project taken up under the Srinagar Smart City project may not lead to desired results since the people at helm are allegedly trying to spoil the show by taking half hearted measures.
The restoration of Raghunath temple located in the Dal Hassanyar locality in the Habba Kadal area that is going on these days has been hit by a stumbling block.
The management committee of the temple has alleged that people at helm at Department of Tourism do not listen to their suggestions that would go a long way in proper preservation of temple.
“Since the Department of Tourism is the nodal agency with regards to this project we had made certain suggestions towards the same. We had requested the department to fix the iron grill at the temple and also put in place the golden coloured tin sheets at the dome so that it does not cave in,” said Bharat Raina, President Raghunath Mandir Committee.
Raina said that instead of listening to the suggestions the people at helm in the department are posing questions saying that there is no need to fix the iron grill at the temple. He said that restoration work should be in tune with the original model of temple adding that any deviation would mar the glory of the temple.
“If the golden coloured tin sheets are not erected quickly then there are chances that the dome may come down. As the winter season is approaching it is important that this aspect of restoration is taken up immediately. If we have rains or snow then the whole process would be spoiled,” said Raina.
Raina said that the department would be responsible if any damage whatsoever is caused to the temple structure. He claimed that an amount of 10 lakhs has been diverted from the funds allocated for the restoration of temple and utilized for restoration of some other religious place.
It would be in place to mention here that restoration of Raghunath temple was taken up under Srinagar Smart City project with the preliminary allocation of 74 lakhs.
Although, the project was sanctioned in March this year the work could start only few days back due to the outbreak of Corona Virus.
The work on the Raghunath temple was started in 1857 by Maharaja Ranbir Singh and it took 18 years to complete the project with the inauguration taking place in 1875.
At the temple 26 idols were put in place but after the onset of militancy these idols were blasted by the subversive elements.
