Pilgrims protest against overcharging by Ponnywallahs

Jammu, July 12: To register their anger against the incompetent authorities managing affairs of the Katra Municipality Mata Vaishnodevi bound pilgrims today staged protest demonstration near Banganga entry point at Katra.
Shouting slogans against the Katra Municipality and Shrine Board authorities the pilgrims gathered in large numbers and staged a sit in dharna before starting their uphill climb.
The agitated pilgrims had collected identity cards of ponnywallahs who were demanding hefty money.
The pilgrims complained that in comparison to fixed rate of 340-460 for different weight categories the ponnywallahs were charging 1200-1500 per pilgrim for one way ride to the bhawan shrine.Similarly the palkiwallhs were charging 4000-5000 from senior citizens for dropping only. Highlighting the issue of overcharging by ponny wallahs,pithus and palkiwallahs the pilgrims said despite fixing the rates under various categories of weight of a pilgrim the ponnywallhs were demanding three-to four times the price.
"This is nothing but a virtual loot and we cannot tolerate this anyone" angry pilgrims said demanding strict action against all those involved in organised loot of pilgrims.
"Where is Shrine board sleeping, where is Katra Municipality authorities who are responsible for regulating the facilities" the pilgrims wanted to know.
The local police authorities rushed to the spot to pacify the agitated lot of pilgrims and assured them strict action against ponnywallahs who were indulging in open loot.
