8/8/2012 12:34:06 AM
Early Times Report
Kathua, Aug 7 : Kathua town is facing a serious problem because of the poor and unhealthy quality of drinking water being supplied to the locality due to severe leakages on water supply pipes alleged People Cum Welfare Society and Youth Movement in Kathua.
Gian Singh Pathania, president of society and Sanjeev Verma, president of youth Movement said they were surprised to see several leakages on water supply pipes which have contaminated the drinking water and may lead to the outbreak of serious and dangerous diseases like gastro-enterities, other alimentary infections, diarrhea etc. They said entire Kathua town has been forced to consume dirty water for long and nobody has bothered since the PHE Department which is mainly responsible for providing clean and fit water to the people seemed apathetic, otherwise there was no reason for things to go from bad to worse. They said many people can be seen down with water born diseases at home these days. They also said that heaps of garbage, overflowing gutters and choked drains with polythene bags, rags and plastic is what one sees in various colonies of the town through which the water pipes are passing and in such areas leakages would be very dangerous for the health of general public. It is also seen that most of constructed water tank of PHE leak and are in bad conditions which is also a source of water contamination.
The society had also said the even though the Govt has provided various materials including lead, spring yarn, wielding material etc to the PHE department to stop the leakages of water supply pipes but nothing have been done by the department to improve the quality of drinking water supply in the town. The Technical Officer PHE Kathua Sh. Anil Gupta replied to ET reporter when he was asked about the problem by saying that the people should inform the PHE department about spots of leakages and we will stop them. This response of the officer has created many doubts on the working and responsibility of PHE towards the people of the Kathua . People have now asked the authorities to start an inquiry so that the guilty are punished for negligence of duty.
